Peter was initially trained in the ErasmusMC/Sophia children’s hospital in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. After qualifying as consultant pediatrician in 2005 he went on to sub specialize in Pediatric Intensive Care at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, from 2005 to 2008. After qualifying as a pediatric intensivist in January 2009 he became a consultant at the pediatric intensive care unit at the Leiden University Medical Center where he is the director of the cardiac ECMO program. His current research focuses on (postoperative) heart failure, ECMO, viral infections, and pharmacokinetics of low-molecular weight heparin and Levosimendan. He is actively involved in Euro-ELSO and the ELSO-education committee.
